Extension cords are for temporary use only.  That’s because most of them can’t carry as much current as permanent wiring and tend to overheat.   The following ways are improper ways to use an extension cord:

  • Using an extension cord as permanent wiring.
  • Plugging in large appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, clothes dryers or space heaters.
  • Plugging in one extension cord into another.
