Hi Friends! It’s Siren here! The official start of Spring may be just a week away, but that hasn’t stopped Old Man Winter from giving us another blast of snow. It is always important go be #FDNYSmart before, during and after a snowstorm.
Before the storm, make sure to have your grownup do things like winterize your car if you have one and to make sure your heating equipment works properly. If using a space heater, be sure to follow these safety tips.
It is also important to have a supply kit of things you may need during the storm. Here are some items you and your grown up should have on hand.
During a storm the best thing to do is stay inside. This includes your furry friends. Avoid driving when conditions are bad. If you must travel be sure to tell your grownup to keep disaster supply kits in your car.
Sometimes a home does get cold. But remind your grownup to NEVER USE heating generators like an oven, stove or grill to heat up your home. It can not only create a fire but also produce deadly carbon monoxide.
When the storm ends, it will be time to clean up. Be sure to dress warmly when heading out to shovel. Try to avoid ice patches that could cause you and your grown up to fall. Try to help your first responders and clear out the snow around your fire hydrants.
Always remember to have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. It can save your life!
